how do you make materials in blender?

so i know that you have to unwrap your gameobject and then swith to uv image/editor but it looks like a weird box, so i tryed making a smart uv project but i cannot tell what is what. i saw other people's games and they have there objects unwrapped where they still look like its still the object all put together, not many little peices. so how do you unwrap your objects?

This is not a Unity question. You should use ctrl-e to bring up the 'edges' menu, and mark certain edges as 'seams'- this tells the automatic unwrapper to split your mesh at those edges to make a sane net.
