Blender Import Has Transparent Sections

Hi, a sword I'm importing has a transparency issue. The blade for one looks like half of it isn't there (see images) in Unity, whereas in Blender this isn't the case. Also, when looking through the "mask" or "skull" decoration on the guard, the view just goes straight through the other side, even though the other side has a mirror duplicate of that skull. See images and ask away if I'm not clear enough:

To clarify, I should add that I suppose I could just add actual faces to the skull where the eyes and mouth are, which I might do. However I still am not sure how to fix the blade being so warped. And yes, I've tried flipping normals, at least I think so.

The normals are probably flipped on these faces. To fix, it's ctrl+n or hit the space bar and type in "recalculate normals".

To help you identify this problem in blender better, make sure you have the backfaces turned off.

That was part of it, but I'm gonna ask you another one. So far I've managed to get Unity to recognize the blade's 4 sides now (progress!) but now when I try to fill in the mouth section (I'll add a picture) with a face I get the dreaded "a polygon of (sword) is self intersecting and has been discarded). Is there a single issue that is usually at the cause of this?

The first picture is in unity, second one in blender*

Probably because you are using N-Gons (>4 sided polys). Try to only use 4-sided polys and even avoid 3-sided ones unless they are necessary. Unity doesn't like N-gons at all. I think it's ALT+J to make N-Gons into Quads.

Also, it's really cool that you are both learning Blender and Unity, but don't do them both at the same time for you own sanity. Learn Blender first if you want to do modeling, then learn Unity. Eventually you can do both, but you wouldn't be running into these problems if you focused on Blender first. But do as you will man and good luck.
