Can't change default material of model

I've imported a .FBX model and I want to change the default material it uses. However, for whatever reason the 'Mesh Renderer' component is greyed out and I am unable to change anything inside it, which isn't very helpful.

How do I set the default material? I want to use a specific material that is shared by multiple models, not an automatically generate one.

Is there a way to apply a material to the object in the asset browser without having to make a prefab of it? So it's already textured when you drag it into a scene ins$$anonymous$$d of having to select every instance of it and apply the same material to it?

Create a prefab from it and change it in the prefab

Is there really no other way? This means that I'll have to go through 20 prefabs containing at least 4 of the same meshes and manually change the material for each one. :(

I use blender and I have been able to set this up. In blender make sure you have assigned a material to your mesh and assign your texture image to that material.

Then in Unity make sure you have imported your texture and made a material from it. Drag and drop your FBX into the same folder as the texture and material and your model should have the default texture applied to it.

This is two processes rolled in to one. Unity cant import materials from Blender. You must import Textures (except UV map) separately. The key is the "Import $$anonymous$$aterials" box in the Unity import for the model. In forums people do mention that you are able to import basic textures if you have Baked them to your model in Blender first, but a material is still unsupported.
