Import CAD models into Unity

Hi,

I just found that unity doesn't support CAD models but support autodesk fbx. I want to import an CAD model and don't know how to do it. Any help please? Thank you.

You can, if you have other Autodesk software, transfer it to something like $$anonymous$$aya or 3Ds $$anonymous$$ax, and export it from there.

Export it to 3DS $$anonymous$$ax which will accept .STEP files. Convert to FBX. Use in unity or AutoCAD.

Hi, thanks for the answer. Now it is working. I have actually another question. I want to compare the size of two objects. How can i do that? I know there is $$anonymous$$esh.bounds& Renderer.bounds. But they return an vector3.

Hmmm, that's not my area of expertise. How do you want to compare them?

Get the bounds for the two meshes. Then see:

http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/ScriptReference/Bounds-size.html

This tells you why the bounds returns a vector3.

Hey LightSource,

I have another questions about importing 3d models into Unity. See, i have made it work as you said before about converting it into FBX in 3ds $$anonymous$$ax. However, the texture of the models is gone. Any help here? Thanks.

Yes that's a bit of a problem. You need to import the materials folder and the object in the same place. Usually at the same time.

When i convert it into FBX model, there isn't any materials folder. It only has one FBX model.

Hi nathan, The materials in a FBX will be autodesk materials. It should be converted into Standard materials. You can do it by using some scripts. Try searching Revit to Unity in Youtube. In these videos there will be an FBX file imported to unity. The second part of these videos explain converting Autodesk materials into Standard materials.
