50k Royalties work-around

I know that once youve earnt around 50k from a game you have to start paying unity devs (as in royalties, etc) but if i release my game for free and put a paypal button for donations.. do i still have to abide by the 50k rule?

thanks

The answer is most likely yes. If you make more than $100,000 off of your game (whether you pay for the game or ask people to donate after playing) you're probably in violation of the Unity Free terms. Even if you have donate button now, then release your game, and suddenly your donations surge, then that income was from your game.

Again though, I tell people this all the time, if you're actually going to make $100,000 either from sales or donations, man up and pay for the full license. Stop trying to cheat Unity.

It's not making $100$$anonymous$$ off your game, though, it's making $100$$anonymous$$ period, through any means, as the EULA clearly states. If you made $100$$anonymous$$ working as an exotic dancer and made nothing from your game, you're still obligated to buy Pro. ;)

I think most exotic dancers are paid cash in hand... ;)

There is no "50K" rule, or "earning money from a game" rule either. http://unity3d.com/company/legal/eula

"Unity Free, which include the free platform add-on products, may not be licensed or used by a commercial entity with annual gross revenues (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000, or by an educational, academic, non-profit or government entity with a total annual budget for the entire entity (based on prior fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000."

ok.. but say i get 100k off of donations. on paper its not going to the game itself.. its going towards me gettin better hardware, etc, whatever floats your boat. so may that be done?

when you are making 100,000$ through your game would 3000$ (or 4500$ in case PC , android and iOS) matter much! it is not even 5% of your income.

not the point. Im just wondering whether donations towards a games further development are considered earning income..

actually In my country if the donation is more than a certain value it is considered as income and I have to pay income tax (especially If it is a non profit organization). I hope the rule varies from country to country, so to get a better answer, you have to write to unity support $$anonymous$$m!
