Initial 3D plane view

I just installed unity today and picked up Unity 3D Game Development by Example Beginners Guide. I followed along until creating a new project and the book says I would be sitting at a 3D plane view but I only see a gray window. How do I get to that 3D plane view with the grid on the X/Z plane?
