New User, New Project

I just downloaded Unity, free license version, on my Mac. I can create new scenes, but not projects. When I try to create a new project, Unity freezes with all of its windows blank gray. On a related note, Unity also freezes when I try to quit it. I have to force quit every time. Surely this is not normal behavior. Does anyone know why these problems are happening, or how to fix them?
