How to add a character controller to a game object?

Question

I am fairly new to unity. I want to control a gameObject; so far want I can figure out is going to the add component menu and trying to find it, but I can't find it.

You will need to import the asset first. Try Import Character Controller, Standard Assets and maybe Terrain from the menus at the top left. You'll find it.

Please use Google to search for some tutorials on Unity basics. Unity Answers is more for technical questions as basics are covered in the documentation.
