Question by ComradeVanti · Mar 25, 2016 at 10:03 PM · answersunanswered

[META] What to do if my question remains unanswered?

Hello community.

So I have seen some similar questions around but none of them really told me what to do or helped me.

If I ask a question and it doesnt get a reply in like 1 day it is likely that it never gets answered, just because of the way new questions get prioritised.

A thread has suggested to comment '"bump" + how old is this question' under your question and I have tried this but all my older question still remain unnoticed.

I do not want to cry around here. But i do want to know what one is supposed to do in these situations. As I have read on multiple threads reposing questions is a no-go so what is the correct way then?

Please help me :)

The way to handle this is to Edit your question to improve the information you give and the presentation of your question.

If noone is answering it is likely to be one of the following

1) TL:DR

2) Not enough info / vague

3) Its a common question or can be easily searched

4) Its not clear whats being asked

5) Noone knows the answer

Bumping questions isnt allowed on UA. It doesnt add anything useful. But, a well placed edit will give you a free bump.

Thanks for the reply.

You see, my problem isnt that my questions are poorly written because if so pleople would likely write "please more info" or something under it.

Rather, I think that people just dont notice it and when 5 new questions get posted its very unlikely that people will notice $$anonymous$$e. And especially after like 2 days its practically impossible to get an answer.

Now you tell me to edit my question but what to do if there is nothing more to say? For example:

I have posted a question in witch I discribe a problem I have with 2D Physics. I didnt get an answer. Now I am supposed to edit the post. What should I write? That I still havent found a solution?

You could try adding some code or the result of some relevant Debug.Log information you found which could be related.

There's always something more you can add which may help point to the problem.

Some questions just aren't going to be answered. Maybe no one knows, maybe no one feels like helping you. That's just the way it is. I haven't looked at any of your Qs (so none of this is personal,) but here are some comments:

o Many Qs are really "help me make my game" to some degree. Those don't even really belong here. You might see a Q similar to yours, that was answered, but that was just someone bored who felt like it.

o Many Q's too hard to explain, and are best solved by reading the manual. There are lots of complicated parts to making a game, and Unity can't explain them all, and that's just the way it is. An example is "how to make one side of a box yellow." The real answer is either learn about how 3D models work, or learn the "looking like X is the same as being X" principle.

o Many Qs are very, very off-topic. Many programming Q's have nothing to do with Unity -- the answer is in any C# forum. The same with some Qs about textures, 3D models, how to use the Apple Developer site ... .

o No one would ever do that Qs. For example, questions about ultra-realism. Games are about making things good-enough. So a Q like that is saying you need to learn the basics and then come back (that's how most people will read it.)

o Maybe it can't be done. If no one answers, maybe that's your answer.

o Someone had to figure it out. Maybe that person is you. For some Q's about the interaction of two new/odd products, maybe you're the first person to try it.

Owen Reynolds

In my case, my questions are about networking lately. I just dont get it and find the manual very unhelpful. So I asked a question. Can be found here:

http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/1163624/sync-complex-variables-and-components-over-network.html

As you can see I give a lot of details and also commented so it gets updated again. But noone answered.

I want to show how my question doesnt fall into the points you discribed above:

  1. I dont want to know how to make a game. I want to know how to sync a spriterenderer

  2. I dont think this specific question is to hard to answer. $$anonymous$$abye it is.. let me know...

  3. The question is about UNET so I dont think its off-topic

  4. I cant be the first one to try to sync a spriterenderer. There are so many multiplayer games doing exactly that and even more complicated things. So.. yeah... I dont think these are the problem either.

So as you can see, the problem just is that my question didnt get noticed. Alright. Can happen. But my whole development process is on pause because of this. I know none of you owes me help but still, it would be nice.

Please, oh please, help me XD

Ah, yours is another type -- totally overwhelmed and want someone to talk them through things. It's not what really UA is for, but it's fine to ask in the Help Room.

But also my first point -- you're describing more of how the game works than you need to -- like you want to someone to ask more details and give advice on how to set things up. And, some of meet500's points -- it's vague (no code,) and also hard to figure out the real question.

Well really the my question is how to sync a SpirteRenderer over Network. I dont see why I would need to show any code. But you see the thing is, if somebody asked fo codesamples I would deliver. Its just that the question didnt get noticed.
