Question by GeoffreyFreudenberg · May 29, 2018 at 05:58 AM · iaploginauthenticationshop

Do I need players to have accounts in order to have an IAP currency (ie. gems)?

Or are these sorts of things handled by Google/Apple? I'm new to this, and I've been trying to find out more so I can add IAP to my game. But I haven't found a clear answer on whether I need to use Firebase or not.

Mostly i'd say yes. Whenever you add something like gems that you want to make people buy/sell then you have to keep track of their "wealth" on some kind of server since this can NOT happen locally. Thus you need a server, thus you need authentication.

But there are some ways that might perhaps help you to find an easy access to this. For example there is a way to use third party authentication which is provided by bigger partys like google, facebook and so on. They provide a way that you can use their account to let people be authnticated in your personal software. This way you have to take way less care of some security problems and only need your own database for the "gemscounts". But not for passwords and so on. There is lot's of stuff to read about this if you search for it.

Hope this points you in some direction!

Thanks, I have another question if you don't $$anonymous$$d! I notice that Google accounts seem to be the most popular way to handle authentication on Android apps, but is there an iOS equivalent, or do they just use Facebook or something?

To be honest i only know that this option exists and can be implemented fairly easy, but i never bothered to check out the details related to the OS. Just from thinking abou it i'd say there is no difference, why should there be one. In the end it's always just sending encrypted credentials. But as i said: I'm not a specialist on this field.
