Modifying a large terrain with new height maps

Perhaps my answer may be more along the lines of using software like meshlab, but I'm wondering how to apply a heightmap to a segment of a large terrain world. So the question I'm asking is, if someone is maintaining a large open-world environment and they want to add a heightmap to any specific area, are there tools in unity for this type of mesh modification or would one have to export the whole terrain and work on it in a separate application?
