What is the best way to monitor my checkpoints in a racing game?

Hello, people. I'm doing a racing game and i'm having problems to organize my code in a way that i don't turn this game into a spaghetti (i'm a newbie making games). The problem is that I want to track players and their cars in the racing route in this manner: 1. The race has many checkpoints between the beginning and the end; 2. A checkpoint is validated only if the player has passed by the immediate previous checkpoint 3. I need to keep track of the chekpoints passed by each player;

The doubts are: 1. How do i represent each player in this game? 2. How do i keep track of the actions of these player? 3. Do i need a script to track all the cars and players? 4. Where all these scripts should be?(in what classes etc) (sorry for my english)
