Question by Jonatanelgstrom · Aug 22, 2012 at 07:02 PM · graphicstextures

Any Borderlands looking texture?

Is there any way that I can get that cool Borderlands look for my game in Unity3D? If you know how(if it's possible) please tell me! Thanks

You need a toon shader (Maybe this one will do, although it misses the outlines) and then combine it with high detail textures akin to those you would normally use for 'standard' graphics. Solid colors as for a simple toon look won't be enough, you need detailed textures (at least Diffuse, Specular and Normals).

Its more than just the toon shader. They use toon shader plus "hand-painted" textures. Hand painted textures vary depending on style. Have a quick google search of the term to see what I mean. To achieve the textures you will likely need to use photoshop(or similar program) and a drawing tablet.

Start by drawing all of the details in black so it looks like a fine tip marker did them. (use the tablet!) this should be on a layer with a transparent background. on another layer(below this one) you can start to colour it in just as you would if it were on paper. Again.. use the tablet. Set your base colour of the model/area to roughly what you want.. then use low opacity to colour everything else in. you want the colour to vary a bit in minor ways throughout the same section. DO NOT use a high opacity pen for details of any sort unless it is in black on the layer mentioned earlier.

This is just how borderlands was done. Other hand-painted textures can be done in alternate ways. However a tablet is very important. This probably wont help you as the question is a year old, but maybe someone else will come across it.
