Question by Zhinkk · May 26, 2014 at 08:59 PM · androidlightingdevice

Lighting looks different on different android devices

My game's design is simple. There are 4 walls facing each other with a point light that travels through this "cave". I don't have any ambient light, so the point light is the only source of light. I'm not using lightmaps either.

My problem is, is that my game looks fine in the editor and on my Galaxy S3. Here's a screenshot:

And here's how it looks on my tablet:

Nexus 7 Screenshot

As you can see there's a world of difference here. Why is this happening?

What shader are you using and what is its fallback?

All the walls are using the same material with the Diffuse shader. I just change color of each individual wall with script.

The obstacles (the cylinders you see in the screenshot) are using Toon Lighted Outline.

And what do you mean by fallback?

Shaders can specify a "fallback", which is an alternative (normally simpler) shader, to be used in case they are not supported by the graphics hardware. But if you're only using diffuse shader that's probably not the issue.

Are you using deferred rendering? $$anonymous$$y bet is that works on the S3 but not on the Nexus 7 (assu$$anonymous$$g it's the original which has limited depth buffer support in Unity).

No, I'm using the Forward Rendering Path. Deferred is a pro feature anyway.

If they have different GPUs they will support different Texture Compression formats. Its in the docs.

Also, this darkness happened to me on my Xperia Z after there was a Unity update around 6 months ago. I solved it by playing with :

Build Settings -> Player Settings -> Resolution and Presentation -> 32 bit Display Buffer / 24 bit Depth Buffer.

I tried:

Both 32 bit and 24 bit checke: still looks dark

Only 32 bit checked: looks dark

Only 24 bit checked: looks dark

None checked: Aha! No, just kidding, still looks dark. :(

I don't know how to fix this. It looks nice on a lot of higher end phones. But the nexus 7 it just looks too dark. Also my friend had a lower end android phone (not sure of model) and it looked dark too.
