maya materials question

i have a few question about materials that are imported from maya. first, and this is quite confusing but only way i could think of that i can have two materials on one model.. i took a model in maya, selected some faces and applied a material. then when that model is imported in unity it has the material correctly displayed on right faces. i can apply other material on the model and it will be applied on the places where other material is not. so that is ok too. but how can i access maya material? to alter its values. it kinda looks locked. also material name is cryptic, many models share the same material but they all have different names, how to solve this? (this will make things harder to abstract since many material have different names)

does anybody has some ideas about this? thanks!

Materials do not import from 3D apps. You create them in Unity.

No, that's just a default diffuse material that has the texture. Unity has no way of importing materials from 3D apps.

Only material names, diffuse and main texture assignment is imported from 3d packages. The rest (shader, other colors and textures) you have to setup in Unity.

What do you mean "it's locked", you should be able to modify materials in Unity.

I also recommend reading about material import options (there is "Generate Materials" on ModelImporter it defines how materials are shared between models).

ok, i figure that out, but material is properly applied in sub level, at correct faces, and i cannot access that properties. so when i want to highlight the model in game i change the colors of the material (main material i apply to the model) but the material that is on the faces is not changed (also i cannot delete this material in unity since there is no option to remove it, it is greyed out)
