Standard Asset First Person Controller FPS Problems

I'm a Unity newbie attempting to create a simple first person camera to move about my first environment, and I've run into a couple of issues:

  1. When I press "Play," I only get about 0.6 FPS. It is truly a slideshow on my ATI 6950.

  2. I see an info message in the editor stating: "Please assign a target to the camera that has a ThirdPersonController script attached."

Given how primitive my procedure is (delete main camera and add standard asset first person controller), it seems certain that someone has encountered this problem before. Anyone have any ideas or references?

Have you tried assigning a target to the camera that has a ThirdPersonController script attached?

I'm at work at the moment, but the only target field on the camera that I remember seeing was a "Target Texture," I believe, which was set to "None." Perhaps I do not understand the purpose of the field, but "None" seems correct. I looked into changing it to something else, but the selection window that appeared contained no default textures. Is there a different camera "Target" field that I've missed?
