Im trying to make is that the rest of the mesh doesnt appear through the grass/fern, is there some shader for it, or is there a different way of doing this? Thanks.

try Partical->Additive shader or choose one shader from partical. It might work.

Its hard to see, your grass in separate objec? is it voxel? Are they combined so backfaces are culled/removed? Try using cutout-diffuse shader, because transparency shader has a lot of render order problems.

i tried to imagine a plane with a part of the texture completeley opaque, and i missed the point of actually trying to make them separate objects...

yeah you say you have to pop it on top as separate object?

oh and yes its a voxel. cutout diffuse is what im using to get shadows working on transparent objects. so im going to make it a separate mesh then :(
