Why does unity 3d delete my stuff when i open a new project?

I am making a Sandbox game and a FPS game at the same time and recently i downloaded a project off the internet and tried to open it in unity but i dont get the buidlings and charactor stuff, so i open my old one and all my stuff vanished. help!!
