Most people use modelling software like Blender, 3D Max, Maya, etc. Blender is the most inexpensive of the bunch seeing as it is free. The others will run you a few thousand dollars at least. I use Blender and I find that it works great. What makes you say that it is unstable?

Anyways, I think you can only make very basic objects in Unity. It's what you can do with the objects that you import that makes unity the best game engine.

If you are having trouble with Blender, ask questions on the blenderartists.org forum. Also, there are some great tutorials under the learn tab above that help you get your feet wet with unity. Another great spot to learn is "CG Cookie", they have tons of tutorials for both Blender and Unity.

I hope that helps..

Good Luck
