How to Import ONLY the Mesh
I'd just like to know if there's a way to import ONLY a mesh. I just want a simple quad (as seems most people), so I don't want all the extra gunk (Default Take, Avatar, etc). I'm importing with Blender, though I don't think that'd be important. I AM importing the .blend file directly, and that may be important.
TL;DR: How do I import only a mesh sans extra gunk?
Unity already has a simple quad, just pointing that out in case you didn't see it in Create Other / primitives. On your import, uncheck the stuff for 'Import Animations' and such - does that clean it up?
@getyour411 I don't see the simple quad, at least not in GameObject > Create Other. What version of Unity are you using? The plane is not quite the same thing - it has 100 times the necessary geometry, which is fine for terrain, but not so much for a sprite.
@getyour411 And that may be it; I'm only running Unity 4.1.5. I'll definitely check it out.

Unity will automatically attempt to set up a model as if it were ready to animate. To avoid the creation of an avatar and default animation take do the following.
Import model into Unity
Select the model in the Project view
Go to the Rig tab in the inspector and change "Animation Type" to "None"
Apply Import settings
After that your model will not have any avatar or animation information attached to it.
Thanks! I did this and it definitely worked. I was hoping to get rid of the object it's contained in as well, but this works just fine.
