Does Unity 5.3 with Android Pro license support using nine-patch PNG files as Android Launch Image?

Does Unity 5.3 with Android Pro license support using "nine-patch" PNG files as Android Splash Screen?

Nine-Patch images are described here https://developer.android.com/training/multiscreen/screensizes.html#TaskUse9Patch

This question seems to suggest that the format is not leveraged by Unity.

Or is the preferred way to deal with Android Splash Screen images in Unity to use the highest resolution that Android is known to support (IMHO that would currently be 640x960) and to let Unity scale it down appropriately?
