Unity Crashes when importing any asset package

This is the first time unity has ever done this to me and now it happens every time.

upon starting a new project I tried adding in just the scripts asset package so that it had the templates for creating a new script with c#, however it crashed upon decompressing, repeatedly.

Then I tried adding in all assets and it crashed then too upon decompressing the first package. Finally I tried each one individually and for each one it crashed... This has become an issue as I am going to be working with unity as part of my job and I need to learn the ropes.

Can anyone suggest any way of remedying this issue? or at least how to work around it.
