In addition to being off-topic, it's a duplicate of: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/39401/3ds-max-blender-or-maya
changed title to be more clear. retagged 3ds, max to 3dsmax and cinema, 4d to cinema4d. If not for the people who made the effort to answer, I'd vote for deleting this. Greetz, $$anonymous$$y.

I've found Maya to be the best for character modelling/animation, and 3DS max to be the best for modelling buildings/environments etc.
Although both products are pricey Blender is probably the best free tool out there.

if you're a student then you can get both max and maya for free over a 3 year student license. all you need is a student id and email address. that goes for all alias software too :)

this is a bit off topic for UNITY answers, I think it would be suited to a forum elsewhere, this is for UNITY related stuff only and this is about 3d modelling software. Please read the FAQ it will help you make more use of this site as well as informing you how to use it properly.
~None the less you did ask a question and you're a beginner in need. I'v had to analysis of the softwares for projects so I have a strong opinion, but that is definatly not to say it is right!!!! I prefere to use 3ds max, it is the all encompassing software and it is one of the industries standards, however it's ugly as hell interface makes using disheartening lol. Maya is brilliant for beginners (not that I was able to tell but other beginners said so) and seen as though Pixar use maya to make animation i think it's safe to say that it's animation and modelling capabilities are definatly more than capable. Cinema 4D has some absolutly amazing effects however I found going from simple learner to pro with it quite difficult, it may be because it was orginally a german piece of software and some of the translations make it seem less logical meaning that you have to work a bit harder to achieve what you want (unless you have a simple tutorial) If it's support that is important for you they all have loads of tutorials all over the net.
Personally I would get the trial software of each of these and model the exact same level and an asset in each of them individually (it's actually what I did) then depending on which one you liked more or which one was easier you will have your answer.
