Question by ChadH · Aug 22, 2012 at 05:16 PM · terrainrenderingdistancedisplay

Cannot see grass terrain unless I zoom in.

I am new to this and just downloaded Unity 3.5.5. I have followed the tutorial steps for the Terrain Engine Guide, however when I get to the "Terrain Textures" and "Trees" portion of it, my display looks nothing like the pictures in the tutorial. Mine is very simple and blocky looking. I do not have the nice flowing details that the tutorial does. I have followed the tut to the letter and still no luck. WHen I download the Medieval pack, I can see all the detail, just not when I try to create my own. I am sure it is simple, I just haven't found it yet.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. here is a screenshot of what I am talking about. http://cl.ly/image/300w3s3F0L41

well, i just clicked delete ins$$anonymous$$d of edit! Is it possible that you have applied the grass texture to the terrain, rather than placing physical grass on the surface of the terrain? I cannot see any defined grass in that image, unless it is fine/thin/short that it blends together from a distance. Try larger grass if it is placed like trees are. terrain grass video : http://vimeo.com/7882205

Thanks alucardj !!! I did apply the grass to the terrain ins$$anonymous$$d of physical grass on the surface of the terrain. I will definitely check out the links you posted. They are sure to be helpful. Thank you SOOO much for the advice :) I will keep you posted on how it is working out. PS I have TeamViewer for you to look at my screen / take control and show me how to do it properly if you would like. chad[at]hornbrook.com

In terrain options you can define the distance for the grass to show on camera. I think it is limited to 250 though.

The thing about grass is that it takes a lot on resources and to save them Unity does not let you cover the whole terrain and render them.

Anyway 250m is quite a distance.

And remember the bigger the distance the worst performance.

@kryptos Thanks for the response, I will keep that in $$anonymous$$d. As I said, I am just beginning this and just wanted to have my scene look like the Tutorial in the Help file. All of the communities responses are very much appreciated.

Don't make answer when you want to comment, in order to keep the board clean. Otherwise this question will look to have 4 answers when only one is relevant.
