Frame rates from unity3 iphone lower than unity iphone 1.5

I imported a unity iphone 1.5 project into unity3 and made minor script adjustments To make it compliant. Those were input related mostly. After building to an ipod 2g, frame rates dropped noticably.i would expect the fps to improve but it had the opposite effect. Any ideas on what could be the reason?

I find my projects dropping frames when using gui text. Worth noting that I'm using OS 3.2 on devices and not 4x sdk

I updated my mac pro software to snow leopard, updated to SD$$anonymous$$ 4.2 and have built my game to ipod 2g and ipad. Both builds play the game slower than my original build from unity iphone 1.5.1 Touch response lags. I uped to Unity 3.1, same problem. Is Unity3.x slower than an old crusty Unity1.5.1? That can't be true. Surely I'm missing something.

I tried building to ipad with armv6 and OGL 1, slow. Tried disabling accelerometer through modification of AppController.mm

Tried reducing texture quality in import setting to compress and max res 512pixels. Could it be the shaders difference?
