Question by Oriek27 · Sep 19, 2010 at 03:46 AM · 3dsoftware

What is a good 3d modeling software?

what is a easy-to-use modeling software that is supported by unity and windows 7? i don't' expect to do anything very advanced, and am making shooting games. the main point is that it needs to be relatively user-friendly. I've tried blender, but couldn't cope with all the shortcuts and views. also, price is not a problem. thanks!

Frankly, if you don't plan on doing anything advanced, I'd save your money and stick it out with Blender or Wings 3D. They are both very capable programs. However, if you absolutely need to blow some money I'd agree with IJM, and go with 3DS or Maya. I prefer Maya, though 3DS Max offers a very intuitive work-flow as well. Neither Maya or 3DS Max are programs that you will master in any short period of time, however they are both extremely powerful tools.

On a side note, if you decide to skip the modeling there are plenty of sites that you can buy 3D models from. http://www.turbosquid.com/ is a great one, and there is also the skill exchange section from the Unity forums located here: http://forum.unity3d.com/viewforum.php?f=11

Generally these tools aren't user-frendly. If price isn't a problem go for 3ds Max or Maya.

'I think that for max and maya doing simple stuff is quite easy. With a few hours of video tutorials, there are plenty around, you will learn how to model and apply textures, going a bit further is where things are complicated. Blender is cool is free and you can do all basic stuff.
