Question by Rybanez · Apr 28, 2011 at 02:22 PM · 3dmayasupportsoftwarestudent

Does unity support the recently released student version of Maya 2012? (legal question below)

Hi! Just wondering the answer to above. Has anyone had any problems with exporting assets etc. with the student version? Any other things to add id appreciate it thanks! =)

In addition to that question, it says as the newly released version if for student learning only- then if i imported anything into my unity project from that version and used it for profit making, would i be breaking any laws?

As it is a new release, it wouldn't be officially supported by Unity and thus some unexpected quirks due to changes/improvements/unsupported new features may occur.

However, if you export your models using an older version of the FBX exporter that Unity does support, you shouldn't run into any problems, given you aren't using something in Maya that the older FBX exporter wouldn't like.

[Edit]

As far as the legal question goes, a student license is, and is stated as being solely for educational use only. Any other use of said license would be a violation of the terms and conditions of that license and could be subject to legal action if you were found out.

Hope that helps.

Correct - and you can assume that it'll soon be fully supported.

Well, we can certainly hope that it makes it into 3.4 anyway.
