Question by Nick4 · Mar 03, 2014 at 11:50 AM ·

Question about Unity Pro EULA

So, I read that you can't earn more than $100.000 a year using Unity Free. I had been using my 30-days trial and it ended a while ago. I'm thinking of buying the full license for Unity Pro but I'm a little short at the moment. So, is it possible to publish your game with Unity Free and then purchase Unity Pro within the year to update your existing game with that version to get through that limit?

And sorry about the title, I couldn't come up with anything. Thanks in advance.

The exact phrase is "a turnover in excess of US$100,000 in their last fiscal year.". So if you already have a greater turnover than 100k you can't use Unity free. If you're still below but you might get over the limit this year, you can use Unity free but you would have to buy pro for the next year.

Note: My answer is not an official statement. It's just how i understand the EULA. If you're in doubt, contact the sales team on the Unity website.

To ansnwer the question, you can publish with free now since you have not yet made any money (or you could buy the license), and if for some lucky reasons, you get more than $100000 turnover (no idea what that means, revenue, profit (naaa not this one), sales , anyway) and you want to continue in this business using Unity then you have to buy the license next year.

It's quite a challenge, though. I contacted them as you suggested. Thanks for taking your times.

$$anonymous$$y general thought is that if you've made more than 100k USD last year, you probably can afford to but a license (or at least do the monthly subscription plan)...

For anyone who's also wondering, I got an answer from one of the Unity guys. He said it was ok to release with free version for now and purchase pro later.
