Unity3d stopped working in WINE from 3.4.2 and onward. Ironically, as Unity pushes for more support for Linux publishing, the Editor works less and less on Linux. With Unity 4, it can't even initialize the license system in WINE.

Unity, hear my plea! At least let Unity work in WINE!

I agree, I will be moving to linux in the near future but will have to halt Unity development quite simply as Unity 4 editor doesnt work on linux. I would like to see this moved from the niche FAFF into a serious project arm. With Valve taking up the Ubuntu linux flag and other language developers alreasy over there I can see Unity being left behind if they are not careful. By other language developers I mean 'Purebasic', 'Blitz$$anonymous$$ax', '$$anonymous$$onkey' (they have just released a program on linux build). $$anonymous$$werks with its all in one editor (rather like Unity's editor) is also looking into Linux as well.

I can see Unity being left behind if they arent careful.

I fully agree with you. I tried to run Unity 4.0 with Wine and even with Virtual Box. None of them worked.

I feel a lot more comfortable on my Ubuntu box, where I have everything I need for Android game development. But I have to switch to OSX, where I am less productive, just for using Unity.

If Unity were running on Ubuntu, I only switch to my $$anonymous$$ac $$anonymous$$ini for publishing things for iOS on the Apple market.

Unity Technologies do not provide the Unity Editor for Linux.

The editor can be run on Linux using Wine. See the community set up wiki page - http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php/Running_Unity_on_Linux_through_Wine
