I just went to https://store.unity3d.com/ and it is possible. What happened when you tried?
It is always possible to purchase a Basic extension when buying Unity Pro. On the other hand, it is not possible to purchase a Pro extension with Unity Free.
I don't know why, now it works... what happened was that if I chose the pro version, all the options on the left were greyed and blocked.
