can you make your own unique character that isn't even realistically human and put them into a game?
Could you elaborate? The obvious answer is 'yes' but I'm not sure that's the only answer you want.
You can have a dot as your character. That is about as far from a realistic human as you can go, so the answer is indeed 'yes'.

I presume that...
You are new to Unity and game production in general &
What you actually mean is can i import a model into unity from an external modeling program
And yes of course you can Unity supports a few file versions, i use .fbx most of the time seems to be most flexible and works for most other programs.
What you need to do is go get something like blender, make your model, export it as .fbx and then just drag it into Unity :D
go to http://www.blender.org/ (btw it's free and just as good as maya and 3ds)

blender is really hard to make things with, if someone can help me with it, i'd be glad. but yes if you do know how to use blender, it's a really good app to make things with.
I don't use Blender myself, but I once read that the program needs a few interface options to be set the right way in order for it to look and work like other 3D modeling programs like 3DS $$anonymous$$ax.
