How do I get real-time, realistic shadows and other effects with Unity 5 Free?
So I have been doing a lot of searching, and the best I could find was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB8zE67TBAs
But that didn't really work for me: it made no differences to my scene whatsover.
So what can I do to achieve realtime illumination, good lighting, and shadows, with Unity 5 Free?

All the effects like real-time lighting and image effects are available in the free version of Unity (which is called Personal Edition). They were formerly only included in the Pro version of Unity, but that is no longer the case. So the tools are at your fingertios, you just need to learn how to use them. Take a look at the Unity User Manual to find detailed descriptions of the features you wish to implement. As a start, I suggest setting up a simple scene and putting a few point lights here and there. These should be set to cause realtime shadows by default. The User Manual tells you how to set up the materials of your objects using the Standard Shader, and how lighting will react to it. Learn how to create, or at least use, Normal with your textures and materials, these will be a huge improvement. After that, you can take a look at Global Illumination.
