is it possible to use completely custom made gui elements for unity's extension?

For some reasons the available GUI elements in unity are not enough for what I need to put in an extension. Like I need keyboard event listener to switch between items in a drop down menu. Wondering how is it possible to bring into extensions a little more sophisticated GUI elements.

What do you mean by extension? Are you extending the Editor? Or making an assembly?
