2d Endless Runner: Dynamically generating a multi-lane path
Hello!
I'm working on an endless runner game that takes a 2d perspective, but uses lane switching mechanics closer to those found in the 3d variety of the genre. The player controls a character that proceeds vertically through a tunnel, with the screen constantly scrolling with their progress. The player can switch between up to five lanes, but the lanes available can shift as walls might creep in on either side, or a wall might temporarily appear in one of the center lanes (with all these being determined at runtime and constantly updated).
Right now I'm thinking through how best to handle scripting the random generation of the cavern and lanes, and am struggling to formulate an approach. Has anybody undertaken something similar in the past, or know of any plugins or products from the asset store that could be leveraged to accomplish what I've described above?
Any and all advice or suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Ben
