How should I go about creating an online multiplayer game that involves players trading game objects with eachother for real money?
There are alot of things I still need to learn as far as online stuff goes, I was hoping someone could simply tell me where to start by giving me a link or the title of a book or some other reliable resource.
I need to learn how the whole networking thing works, as far as what parts of the game will be taken care of on the server and what parts will be computed on the client's computer, and how to write the code for setting all of this up. If it would be necessary for the game to communicate with a website made in dreamweaver I would also like to learn about that. And finally the idea of implimenting paypal to either the game itself or the webpage that the game would be communicating with to allow players to post trade offers and that sort of thing. I just want to learn all the details of how this stuff works because I am pretty new to the online side of it, however I am getting pretty good with javascript in unity. Any help on where I should start would be greatly appreciated!
I guess you should start at the beginning.
Learn how to code in Javascript, c#, Objective-C, Perl, PHP and $$anonymous$$ySql.
Completely familiarise yourself with LA$$anonymous$$P, double-entry accounting, and relational databases.
Then specifically master the general broad fields of multiuser servers, online commerce and game development.
After that all you'll need is a great art and marketing department.
I'm thinking .. could it be you're more of a BUSINESSPERSON, than a developer per se?
Why not just pay people to make these things for you?
You could simply get a job (doing whatever it is you do now) and use the money to pay people to do these things. (Go offshore, whatever.)
it is inconceivable you could achieve it personally in less than say 5-10 years, and you have to ask ... why? You just want to run the game right? You will make far more money just working for yourself (whatever you do) at the moment, ahd you can pay freelancers to do all this stuff. Could that help?
If your really wanna pursue it yourself, you are already good at Javascript in Unity, I would suggest looking in to writing multi-user servers, so with perl, say, on a rented server. Good luck!!
find some other games that do what you want to do and get in contact, you never know one of them may even share something. attend some functions, after all their learning events so hassle everyone. you will find some people even like to brag alot and will talk for hours about it
I think I am more of a developer than a businessman however I do like the business side of things too. I figured there would be a framework that I could follow to create everything I need being that so many people have already made things like this. Plus I enjoy learning new things so I would be willing to learn whatever I need to to make this because I think it will be worth it. Do you happen to know of any good resources for getting started with all this??
And another thing I was planning on creating the website and paying a host to put it on the server for me. I don't know if I would still need to write any of my own server code or not because i'm not sure how this all works yet.

Nobody else has actually answered, and I need the points, Filler! :)
If you really want to purse this, I urge you next to learn how to write a multiuser chat server in Perl
In this way you will fully ultimately learn about TCP/IP, threaded programming, and servers generally.
By some books and google, I just randomly found...

When you can write superb multiuserservers, cmon back! :)
Please give me lots of ticks and points for this answer :)
Seriously, your next step is literally to learn how to program a MP server (so, a chat server is the basic version) in PHP or Perl.
If you are curious your next step will be getting really good at MySql, but that is down the line.
"By some books and google"? BUY GOOGLE?! I believe if this guy can purchase Google, then he's set. Your answer in the comments rings true: this would be a f***ing huge undertaking.
@Joe: I've worked with $$anonymous$$$$anonymous$$Os before and the code is nothing short of being a beast. With all the packet errors and other fun things that can possibly screw you over, I think it would be much well-advised to avoid going over your head and trekking into the land of no return. Just a thought.
Edit: A note that packet errors will pretty much occur any time you try to update your game as well, so you better get used to them. If the game is going to be connected to real money, you'll need to look into security, which is such a broad field that me going into it would take over 1 day's worth of writing. Honestly, just hire somebody who knows this stuff x_x.
Would it be possible to use a server that is already out there such as smartfox?
