audio from mic, db value keeps getting stuck at - infinity ?

I am trying to gather data from a microphone in real time/ near real time. The issue I'm having is that occasionally the code seems to stop working and the db value gets stuck at - infinity. i tried to set a threshold for the db value but now occasionally it gets stuck at -160 db instead.

any help would be great .
