Question by ap_14 · Apr 16, 2015 at 09:31 PM · inspectorprefabsmaterialsmetametadata

What happened to my Materials and Prefabs?

So I encountered this issue when opening up my Unity 5 project. All of a sudden my materials and prefabs are no longer recognized by Unity as being a file of that type, and as such I can't edit them in the inspector or continue to use them in my project. The existing GameObjects in my scene still have the materials and the prefabs still appear blue as if they are connected, but I can't use them anymore or make any changes to them. Not really sure what's going on here, it probably has something to do with my storing the project in Dropbox, but I have been working on projects like this using Dropbox on a dozen different computers and haven't encountered this issue before. I also recently worked on the project on a Windows 8 machine when I had previously been using OSX and Windows 7 machines, not sure if that could be related.

I had this same problem today. I modified several prefabs and animations on my desktop computer, then committed them to SVN and tried to open them on my laptop, but they were all blank. The file sizes show that they aren't empty (like when you forget to save before closing unity), but Unity just can't seem to recognize them. It's worth noting that just before opening them on the laptop, I upgraded the editor to the latest version (from 5.0.1f1 to 5.0.2f1) and it needed to upgrade some assemblies again, so maybe that has something to do with it...

I was able to fix this by simply selecting the messed up assets and right-click > Reimport. Hopefully the same works for anyone else who runs into this.
