Lighting Issues

I am having a strange issue where the lighting on a sphere doesnt fade away, but rather does this:

sorry about the stretching, i dont know what caused it, but you can still see that the light (its directional) isn't smooth, its just blocky... How can i fix this? is it somewhere in the render settings or what, because i'm lost here.
