How to reduce the number of bones in a rig
I am currently working on an iPhone version of an existing PC game. We have full access to the art assets from the original so we are busy reducing polycounts, batching textures etc. But we are lost when it comes to lowering the number of bones in the animation rig. The characters have upwards of 90 bones which we need to reduce.
We obviously don't want to re-animate every single animation on another rig, so is there a way to bake animations from one rig to another simular one?
This isn't exactly a Unity question. You'd have to ask people who know about your specific 3d modelling application for help with this one.
In my experience, this kind of job is excessively painful. If you remove even one bone, it can screw up all of your animations. Either make do, or prepare to do a lot of work remaking all the animations.
