Question by EricKraven · Jun 02, 2018 at 01:01 AM · terrainterrain generationterrain-editor

I want to create a 3D World.

Let me start with this, I have very little experience in coding or programming in general. I am interested in creating a 3D game in my free time, learning by watching tutorials, etc. I know programming is difficult to learn, and incredibly time consuming. What I would like to know, is some suggestions on what tools to use to start building a world in a medieval setting that will be fairly simple to get into. I feel like the world itself is what I am most interested in creating. Additionally, are there any premade AI? As I said, pretty new to the programming and Unity scene, so whatever I can get to make things start smoother would be nice. I would ideally be able to create a small section of a forest or village and be able to move my character around in it as soon as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

there are different skillsets required for different aspects of a game. modelling, animating, scripts, etc and they all need to sit together for a nice finished result. Your best bet is to start small. Pick an area you want to work on and go for it. Ins$$anonymous$$d of creating an entire world, create smaller areas. if youre interested in creating the art, look into blender, max, photoshop, zbrush, substance painter, etc.

if youre still interested in creating an entire world, there are a lot of tools to help. World machine is great for creating terrain. There are assets on the store like gaia, terrain composer, map magic, etc that can assist in generating great landscapes.

AI seems daunting especially when first getting into it. the thing to keep in $$anonymous$$d is that, computers are stupid. they do only what they are told, and they are based 100% off logic. You can create very complex ai with simple bool (true/false) checks. Dont expect anything to be a simple "plug and go" solution. Everything you put into a game will need to be specifically tweaked to fit your project so it will perform like you expect it to.

Thanks, you were very helpful. I have been working in Blender since I posted the message and have gotten several aspects down. I haven't been able to do my own textures very well though, and I am a 2D artist mostly.(Never on computer though) Do I have to have a draw pad to do textures professionally?

yes, some people will tell you that you can do it with a mouse/keyboard, and maybe they can...but if youre co$$anonymous$$g from a traditional background you will want to pick up a tablet. if youre real ambitious, grab a cintiq, they are amazing

Blender for the modeling. GIMP or Photoshop for the textures. There is a ton of AI on the Asset Store, as well as more models and textures and skyboxes. Just make sure you look at the license.
