I was on the right track about adding the weapon to the right bone I wanted. I just had to position the weapon correctly.

How do I include the imported character model's weapon in the character animation?

I bought this model package from the asset store and it came with animations for the models and some weapons to go with them. I figured out how to get the character to animate and as you can see in the screenshot I included the "FireGun" in the right hand of the model in the hierarchy.

I expected it to somehow bind the weapon I placed in the hierarchy to the hands of the model so that when it animates, the gun is included in the animation and moves properly along with the hands of the model. But this didn't happen. What's happening is that the "FireGun" model is floating next to the character model. What am I missing here?alt text

I thought may that I had to add the Skinned Mesh Renderer component to the FireGun and select the root bone I wanted, I.e the right hand, but it came out as skewed in its position. Now I'm running out of ideas. Also I'm a programmer not a modeler/animator. Any help is appreciated.
