Reasonnable number of polygons for tree for 2017
I'm pretty new to Unity but i've been spending my last days checking the many ways of saving on performance. I'm building a PC FPS survival game (How original of me).
But thing is, polygons are pretty. I really like them, especially for trees.
So with the PCs getting pretty good today, i was wondering if it was reasonnable (or totally insane) to think about 5K polygon for a level 0 LOD tree , including i'm going to display quite a few of them (a Jungle to be precise). So basically i'm talking about speedtree quality models (Maybe not like the 8K free broadleaf one but almost). I'm talking about HQ settings ofc.
Thing is technical capabilities are increasing so fast that it's really hard to find reliable data about this.
I would really appreciate any enlightment.
PS: I'm going for a tropical environment, so it's pretty cool to notice that palm trees models use way less polygons than regular ones (3/4K poly palm trees are sicko).
