Change sprite on click

I'm just wondering how I could attach a button to a change-sprite function. Idea is that when the player clicks the left or right button, it will sort through the multiple shirt colours (lame but I'm still new. All that changes is the shirt colour, not the actual sprite) and the player can choose which one they want. Once they hit okay it will send them back to the main menu and they play the game with their chosen character.

Can anyone guide me through how to do this?
