Question by grimmy · Jan 07, 2013 at 02:23 PM · crashstartup

Why won't Unity3d run?

I recently installed Unity 4 but had to uninstall it because it kept crashing to desktop in my project(CTD bug reported and successfully reproduced by Unity Tech). I had no other option but to revert to Unity 3.5 so I installed 3.5.7 this morning and when I try to run it nothing happens...nothing (no services or applications running in task manger). There is just a little load icon for a couple of seconds, then nothing. I have tried uninstalling many times, re-installing...tried installing 3.56 but this has the same issue..I've also restarted PC many, many times...

..but nothing. Anyone any ideas?

Things Ive tried:

  • Installing & re-installing 3.5.6

  • Installing & re-installing 3.5.7

  • Rebooting -over and over

  • Cleaning registry

  • Checking for viruses

  • Making sure Unity can see through WIndows firewall

  • Uninstalling the Asset Server & Monoscript manually.

  • Updating GFX drivers

  • Rebooting some more

So far this year, myself and Unity have had a bad relationship...and to think that last year was so good.

I should also mention : Windows 7 64bit 8gb ram AMD 6900 GFX card

Does the editor log files say anything that might help? You should be able to find the log files somewhere like this(windows):

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Unity\Editor

Unfortunately the editor log in AppData/Local/Unity/Editor only contains a log from 2 days ago when I was having issues with Unity 4. The exact path you mention doesn't seem to exist.

After failure, open the EventViewer on your computer, click on Applications and look and see if unity threw an exception and logged it in there.

No events that I can see. I checked Windows logs/Application and ad$$anonymous$$ events but no problems or warnings. (?)

Ah..there was a warning from earlier today (i did a search for Unity)which reads: Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.
It looks like the Asset server server too. I'll try cleaning the registry again I guess..?!?!

No I just want to open an empty project. In my Unity folder I only have an Editr and a $$anonymous$$onodevelop folder. Is that right?

That is correct.
