Export Character and Animations from blender into Unity 5.5.3 folded looking character

Hello. I have an fbx character that I imported into Blender to modify the uv and apply texture. Once character is finished I export into .fbx.

When I import into Blender I use these settings:

Import User Properties Import Enums As Strings Ignore Leaf Bones Automatic Bone Orientation

My export settings for .fbx are this: Main tab settings of Empty, Armature, Mesh, Other. In the Armature tab I deselect Add Leaf Bones, Only Deform Bones is also unchecked. Armature set to Root.

So when I import into Unity it looks fine in the scene. However, when I go an apply a simple 'walk' animation to it. It looks like this:

This is what I see when I go to Configure my Rig on the Character and a 90 degree version of this shows in the scene when I try to play an animation. Before animation it looks like my normal character. It looks painful. Does anyone know what could cause this to happen?

On my export options I am going to try and export without armature or maybe remove "Other' and 'Empty'.
