Voyager Live is a project which offers Debian- and Ubuntu-based flavours of a desktop distribution. The project has announced the release of Voyager Live 12, which is based on Debian 12 "Bookworm". The new version focuses on improving the availability of firmware for fresh installs. "With numerous Themes and Wallpapers and essential software and many other new features to discover like Scrcpy to have your smartphone screen on your PC. Debian 12 'Bookworm' contains over 11,089 new packages, bringing the total to over 64,419 packages. Most of the software included with Debian has been updated, with over 6,296 packages removed because they are old or obsolete. The installer on Debian has received various enhancements which have resulted in better hardware support and exciting new features. Take, for example, improved handling of proprietary (non-free) firmware for hardware, which now makes it easier to load these firmwares from the installer. This was made possible through the inclusion of Debian APT 2.6 which allows for better handling of non-free firmware on Debian. So non-free firmware binaries will now be enabled by default when it is verified that they are needed. These changes will allow better support for different hardware running on non-free firmware, especially GPUs and Wi-Fi adapters." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Download (MD5): Voyager-12-debian-amd64.iso (4,212MB, pkglist). |

The Debian project has announced the release of Debian 12 "Bookworm", a new stable version which will receive five years of security updates. The new version shifts the way the project handles non-free firmware in an attempt to make Debian more compatible with a range of consumer hardware. "Bookworm will be supported for the next 5 years thanks to the combined work of the Debian Security team and the Debian Long Term Support team. Following the 2022 General Resolution about non-free firmware, we have introduced a new archive area making it possible to separate non-free firmware from the other non-free packages: non-free-firmware. Most non-free firmware packages have been moved from non-free to non-free-firmware. This separation makes it possible to build a variety of official installation images. Debian 12 Bookworm ships with several desktop environments, such as: GNOME 43, KDE Plasma 5.27, LXDE 11, LXQt 1.2.0, MATE 1.26, Xfce 4.18. This release contains over 11,089 new packages for a total count of 64,419 packages, while over 6,296 packages have been removed as obsolete." Barry Kauler has announced the release of EasyOS 5.4. EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution which uses many of the technologies and package formats pioneered by Puppy Linux. "EasyOS Kirkstone-series version 5.4 has undergone many changes since 5.0. There are now four package managers: PKGget, SFSget, Flapi and Appi -- the latter two are for installing and managing Flatpaks and AppImages. Each app runs as its own user; for example, Kdenlive video editor runs as user 'kdenlive', providing isolation from other apps. The packages in EasyOS are compiled from source, now at the OpenEmbedded/Yocto Kirkstone 4.0.10 release. Greatly improved international language support for French, Spanish and Russian. The default built-in browser is Chromium; however, menu entries are provided to download Firefox and Vivaldi, and also update them. They also run as their own user!" The project's latest version, NixOS 23.05, mostly provides updates desktop enviroments and a newer Linux kernel. "In addition to numerous new and upgraded packages, this release has the following highlights: Core version changes: default linux: 5.15 -> 6.1, all supported kernels available. systemd has been updated to v253.1, see the pull request for more info. It’s recommended to use nixos-rebuild boot and reboot, rather than nixos-rebuild switch - since in some rare cases the switch of a live system might fail. glibc: 2.35 -> 2.37. Cinnamon has been updated to 5.6, see the pull request for what is changed. GNOME has been upgraded to version 44. Please see the release notes for details. KDE Plasma has been updated to v5.27, see the release notes for what is changed. Python implements PEP 668, providing better feedback to users that try to run pip install system-wide. nixos-rebuild now supports an extra --specialisation option that can be used to change specialisation for switch and test commands. libxcrypt, the library providing the crypt(3) password hashing function, is now built without support for algorithms not flagged strong. This affects the availability of password hashing algorithms used for system login (login(1), passwd(1)), but also Apache2 Basic-Auth, Samba, OpenLDAP, Dovecot, and many other packages."
