Starship Shield not working

So I am making a starship game. My ships have shields surrounding them, but I have a problem. I am trying to make the shields invisible unless actively participating in a collision. Also, the shields are using mesh colliders due to their elliptical nature. So I made two ships and gave them both shields. I rammed one into the other... and only the stationary, rammed one had shields show up. Please Help!
