I use Mirror, It works just like Unet so all the tutorials are cross compatible, and Unet projects can be converted by changing name spaces.
You can make a free multiplayer game as mirror is free. but it will need someone to host (like minecraft) or a dedicated server.

@eu1247 Sorry to say, the answer is no. Because Unity doesn't offer any free plan of Unity networking. Well, there is a free plan showing that we can get 20CCUs but the fact is that they are only for development purposes. If you want to go live, you will need to have a pro subscription.
I am angry about this. I searched up in google and came here and decided to tell that we have no place to make multiplayer games for free. So we gotta wait until it is completely free. :'(
That's complete nonsense. Apart from the fact that Unity has deprecated UNet, UNet is / was completely free. What is not free is when you want to use hosting services for relay servers or matchmaking servers. Nobody does stop you from rolling your own solution.
Sorry but if you expect any company to invest money into building, running and expanding a network service for free you live in a fantasy world ^^.
Running a server costs money. Not only the electricity consumed but also the network traffic generated. While it is common for private ISP contracts to have flat rates, the majority of business contracts are charged per traffic volume. In the end every byte that is transferred through the internet costs money and someone has to pay for it. No company in the world would do any of that for free. $$anonymous$$any people have a twisted / skewed view of reality. Google see$$anonymous$$gly is providing all their services for free, but in the end someone has to pay the bill. In the case of google that's mainly the advertisers. Just because google does this money shifting internally, expecting that this is the norm is just delusional.
So your answer is wrong and misleading. At the moment Unity itself doesn't really provide you a network solution out-of-the-box as they are working on a new one. However you are not forced or required to use the network solution that comes with Unity. You are free to use any other solution that suits your needs or roll your own solution (which is what many companies do anyways depending on the requirements). I can recommend this live stream
