Is there a best practice for adding new tiles?
I'm breaking a lot of new ground while creating my current project (top-down 2D RPG). Creating sprites, objects, tiles, etc., is a rather large process. On the subject of terrain tiles, such as grass, dirt, paths, etc., is there a best practice for adding new tiles to a project? Adding new tiles to a tile palette is easy enough, but I'm curious about the best way to add new tiles to a project. For example, let's say I have a tile sheet that has grass, dirt, and a number of other terrain tiles. But try as I might, no doubt I'll forget something, such as a swamp tile, lava tile(s), etc. What is the best way to add these to a project? If I edit a master terrain tile sheet, it can throw off the tile palette in Unity. However, if I just import a new tile sheet, even if it only has a tile or two on it, I can easily add those tiles to the tile palette. However, if I keep doing that over and over, whether as a product of poor planning, coming up with new ideas while developing the project (yikes!), or just needing to make necessary changes, I can see myself coming up with a rather cumbersome series of tile sheets, even though my tile palette is still nice and neat. Is that normal and I should just get used to it? Or is there a better way? Been wrestling with this for a while now and haven't come up with a satisfactory solution, so any help will be much appreciated :).
