Question by Jeremy-Borton · Jan 11, 2016 at 09:14 PM · editorterrainpaintelevation

Can't paint terrain or use terrain tools

Yes, I have a half done terrain, and the second time I open up the program, the terrain tools don't work. Can't paint, can't raise/lower terrain. I've had this problem before, and had to start with a new terrain. Any help is appreciated.

Window, Layouts, Default fixed the bug! Also make sure opacity is 50+ or you might not see the brush working. Apparently switching to the default layout fixes the terrain editor problem I was having. Found the answer as many others have had the same issue.

Thanks! Had the same problem - your solution worked for me.

It's been 4 freaking years and I'm still having this problem. Unity closed this as an issue because they claim it can't be reproduced, yet I find this issue all over the place. Guess I'll be resetting my layout to default for another 4 years. So they might as well get rid of custom layouts because you'll never get to use one.

Had issues painting in unity 2018.3, drove me nuts for months. Finally figured it out thanks to someone on the forum. Wanted to pass this along to anyone else who might be having the same issue.

Edit -> Project Settings -> Quality Set Textutre Quality to Full Res

That solved it for me! Now I am able to paint textures onto the terrain.

Using 2019.1. Ran into the same problem. Tried what you suggested, still can't paint textures. I can raise/lower height fine, but nothing happens with textures.

I had this exact same issue and the solution for me was to just set my "layout" back to "Default". Strange, I know...

My problem was that I have deleted Terrain Collider and after that the Unity went crazy. Putting it back fixed the problem.

Interesting about the terrain collider. I wasn't messing around with $$anonymous$$e, but I'll keep it in $$anonymous$$d. Thanks though.
